What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?

A CSA – Community Supported Agriculture – is a partnership between a farm, or in our situation a group of farms, and you the consumer. According to Local Harvest web site (Local Harvest) “A CSA, (for Community Supported Agriculture) is a way for the food buying public to create a relationship with a farm and to receive a weekly basket of produce. By making a financial commitment to a farm, people become "members" (or "shareholders," or "subscribers") of the CSA”.

The Buy Fresh Buy Local website of PASA –the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture  further describes a CSA as “a direct connection between the farmers and the consumers. To join a CSA is to buy a share of the season's harvest. The farmer gains the security of knowing he or she has been paid for a portion of the harvest and the farmer's "community" participates in how and where their food is grown. This direct connection puts the face and place of food in full view. “

Before the start of the season, when the CSA is planning the upcoming year, shares are sold to members of the community at a fixed price. The CSA farmers plan the crops to meet the shares that have been sold. Every week throughout the season, the CSA community receives a box of that week's harvest.

January 2010

We are pleased to announce the continuation of Sunny Harvest Farms CSA, between Wynnorr Farm and a group of local Amish farmers.  In addition to the Stratton family this partnership includes eight local Amish families from Lancaster County. Most of these are young couples with children who are looking to diversify their farm operations and provide opportunities for their families.

The season will run from mid-May to October 30th 2010.  This venture is in addition to our regular market.  We will continue to operate the Wynnorr Farm produce market as always.

For our third season we are offering a 24 week subscription beginning in mid-May and continuing until late October.  Each week we plan to include an average of nine different items for each member share. Seasonal Produce will include more than 50 types of produce. Not all items will be included each week.

Whenever possible, produce will be grown using naturally grown or organic methods. A full list of this year’s planned crops is listed below.

We will also occasionally include specialty items such as homemade mustard, jams, cut flowers and baked goods.  At this time we are not offering “pick your own” produce.

The cost for this season for a full share is $750.00 paid in advance. We are also offering half shares for $390.00 paid in advance.  A half share is picked up once every two weeks, receiving the same items and amounts as a full share that day.

We are offering a variety of Payment Plans and Options this year, so please study the attached Pricing Plans carefully.  Payment discounts are offered for early payment at time of registration for some plans.

Memberships available on a first come first served basis.  By joining now, your family receives a summer of fresh local produce at a guaranteed low price.

Our third season will include 24 weeks of produce with approximately 8-10 items each week.  Missed pick ups will not be refunded.  Shares are non transferable without our permission.  You may split a share with a friend or neighbor as long as all produce is picked up together at the same time.  Membership Card or Photo ID must be presented to pick up your weekly share. If you are on vacation, you may send someone (with your membership card) to pick up your share.  Please note we are offering a Vacation Plan Option – see attached for details.

Your once weekly pick up will be at Wynnorr Farm, unless we are able to arrange for other pick up points.   If you are interested in helping sponsor another pick up point, please give us a call – 20 share minimum required for a separate site.

Please be aware that most of the crops are weather sensitive and the control of the weather is out of the farmers’ hands.  Therefore some crops may not grow as expected and be available, if the weather does not cooperate.

Your share will hopefully include seasonal produce from the selection below. Not all items will be offered each week. Please be sure to check out the link on the right of this page to the Pa Dept of Agriculture's seasonal produce list.  Remember that unlike a supermarket chain a CSA does not have all types of produce available each week.
